Work permit in Bosnia and Herzegovina
A work permit gives a foreigner the right to work for a specific employer in Bosnia. It always goes together with a residence permit. Here is how the two fit together.
Work permit or residence permit?
Two different documents from two different authorities. Most foreigners who work in Bosnia need both.

How the process works
We prepare the documents and coordinate each step with the employer and the authorities.
- Employer
Job and employer in Bosnia
A Bosnian company — your own or an employer — offers the job and applies on your behalf.
- Employment service
Work permit application
The employer applies to the competent employment service, usually after showing that no suitable local candidate is registered.
- Service for Foreigners
Temporary residence for work
With the work permit approved, the foreigner applies for temporary residence for the purpose of employment.
- Start
Registration and start of work
After residence is granted, the worker is registered for social insurance and can start working.
By law, a foreigner coming for paid work must have the work permit before entering Bosnia, and may start work only once temporary residence is granted (Articles 62 and 67, Law on Foreigners of BiH). Permits are decided by the authorities. We prepare complete applications and coordinate the procedure, but no one can lawfully guarantee approval. Be careful with anyone who does.
Work permit questions
Do I need a work permit if I own a company in Bosnia?
Owning shares does not require a work permit. If you also work in Bosnia — as director or employee, physically in the country — you need a work permit and temporary residence for work.
How long is a work permit valid?
Usually for up to one year, tied to the employer and job. It can be extended while the employment continues.
Can I change employer with the same permit?
No. The permit is issued for a specific employer. A new employer has to apply for a new permit.
How long does it take?
Typically one to two months for the work permit and residence together, depending on the canton and completeness of documents.
Can family members join?
Spouses and children can apply for temporary residence for family reunification once the worker’s residence is granted. Family members need their own work permit to work.
